Healing the Whole Person: ReStart

According to the CDC, the percentage of adults in the United States who experienced symptoms of depression or anxiety was around 41.5% in February of 2021. That number is likely even higher for those who have also experienced homelessness. At VOA, we know that recovery depends on treating the whole person, especially the mind.

VOA’s ReStart program seeks to work toward healing for those struggling with their mental health and homelessness. These clients can suffer from a wide variety of mental illness, from depression to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Some of these struggles are the result of a chemical change in the brain that no one saw coming. Others are caused or heightened by loss of employment, housing, isolation, or childhood trauma. Through counseling and therapy, our staff work with clients to uncover the root issue, re-connect to their sense of self, and find a path forward.

Once a person is able to prioritize their mental health, the rest of the path toward independence and purpose becomes that much smoother. We are thankful to the generous donors who enable us to provide counseling and therapy on-site for our clients. Because of you and donors like you, lives are being changed every day!
