A Pay Phone, Two Generations, and a Conversation That Matters
Sierra Manor is part of a groundbreaking experiment connecting our residents with college students across the country — proving that meaningful connection has no age limit.
Tucked into the game room at Sierra Manor sits something you might not expect to see in 2026: a pay phone. But this is no ordinary pay phone. Pick it up, and you’re instantly connected — for free — to a college student on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, nearly 2,500 miles away.
It’s called the Zoomer-to-Boomer Hotline, and Sierra Manor is proud to be part of it. The project is the brainchild of Matter Neuroscience, a startup dedicated to understanding the science of happiness and building tools that foster genuine human joy. Their mission is simple but powerful: bring two of the loneliest groups in America — young adults and older adults — together through the lost art of conversation.
The setup is beautifully simple. A refurbished pay phone outside Pavement Coffee House near Boston University is labeled “Call a Boomer.” Our phone here at Sierra Manor reads “Call a Zoomer.” Pick up either one, and you’re instantly connected to a stranger on the other end — no apps, no screens, no agenda. Just conversation.
Why It Matters
Loneliness is one of the most serious public health challenges of our time. Studies show that both older adults and college-aged young people report the highest levels of social isolation of any age group. And the consequences go far beyond feeling blue — severe loneliness is linked to increased rates of heart disease, anxiety, and depression.
Matter Neuroscience believes small, positive interactions can change that. A chance conversation with a stranger — even a brief one — can lower stress hormones and trigger feel-good responses in the brain. The pay phone is designed to make those interactions easy, spontaneous, and deeply human.
It just reminds people that they are not alone.

Our Residents Showed Up
Since the hotline launched in early March, Sierra Manor residents have answered the call — literally. Several residents have picked up the phone, striking up conversations with students about classes, careers, movies, family, and life. The average call lasts nearly three minutes, and nearly 900 calls have been made between the two phones since launch.
Resident Maria Jaynes, 73, has taken two calls and described both as wonderful. She chatted with young men about college life, shared her favorite films, and talked about her part-time retail job. For Maria, staying open to new people and new ideas is what keeps her young at heart — and this project gives her a new way to do exactly that.
Very lively communication is very important between the different generations. It keeps me young, and I’m a young person at heart.

The project has also gone viral. In one widely shared video that has garnered millions of views on Instagram, a Boomer named April picks up the phone and connects with a Zoomer named Charlotte. When April asks Charlotte for life advice — a gentle flip of the usual script — Charlotte replies that she thinks people should put their phones down and spend more time outside meeting people face to face. Two generations. One phone call. More in common than expected.
The World Is Taking Notice
The Zoomer-to-Boomer Hotline has captured national and international attention. We’re proud that Sierra Manor and Volunteers of America are at the heart of this story — and even prouder of the residents who picked up the phone and made it real.
